With the snow sliding off the metal roof of my barn, the lists of things to do in spring is already reeling but cloning or cuttings of some bee beneficial trees and shrubs is on my list. Cloning can be done to increase your landscaping for little investment and a little care. Some species require a rooting compound or stimulator to be applied and soil or drainage material. Some are more willing and require only a clean cut and to be jammed into some moist earth. With woody plants and some 'cane' plants like elderberry, there are 2 basic times to take or cut your cuttings, when the plant is growing or when the plant is dormant. Hardwood cutting are taken during dormancy. The cutting is generally woody and firm. Softwood cuttings are taken when the plant is actively growing. Softwood cuttings can be woody and firm or softer and tender. Each species may be even more specific as to the best time to start your cuttings. Things I am getting ready to propagate by cuttings in March are going to be, high and low bush blueberries, elderberries, hydrangeas in pots. I will also propagate elderberry and willow by simply cutting about a 12" section of stem and jamming it into the moist ground. Let's hear from folks, what are you growing? What are you interested in planting?
